Maxine Helmey was first exposed to watercolor in 1987 while living in Augusta, one of Georgia's most beautiful cities. After studying under some of the most accomplished artists in the country, she became
a serious artist. Maxine Helmey

Returning to her hometown of Savannah, Georgia, she continued to paint commissioned pieces and enjoyed teaching several classes a week. This gave her the freedom to paint different subjects and try new techniques.

In March 1998 she moved her home studio to the City Market Art Center in Savannah's historic district. It was there that the series Romantic Tour of Savannah was born. Pieces from that series were chosen by WTOC TV for their 2001 community calendar.

Maxine's work has won numerous recognitions and awards including: first place, state of Georgia Marine Extension Service for Anthozian; merit award for Summer Gate,
Savannah Art Association, and best of show for Rainy Night in Georgia. The magazine Best Read Guide of Savannah chose her Six Pence Pub for their May, 2003 cover.

Her next Savannah series was titled Around and About the Squares, followed by Gates and Gardens of Savannah. Work in this series included both watercolor and oils.

The 2003 series, Isle of Hope on the Bluff will showcase 20 new works that depict the quaint and picturesque homes and gardens of Isle of Hope's tree lined streets.The 'Christmas Brian Street', was chosen for the 2004 Holiday Tour of Homes.

Her original paintings and giclee prints can be seen in her gallery in the Savannah City Market, upstairs in the Franklin South building. Beginning in September 2003, her work will hang in the new and trendy shop, Metals and Paint located at 107 West Congress Street, Savannah.
